Mumbai... The battle of words finally came to an ecstatic end with 14 years old Vaswati Das from Guwahati emerging as the winner and Atreyee Ghosal (14) from Bangalore being the runner-up at the national finals of HDFC Life Spell Bee India Spells 2013. Powered by the Times of India, the winner and runner-up, along with other participants were felicitated by Soha Ali Khan in an event at a south Mumbai hotel on Monday................thsts the ambition of a girl

Students across 35 and more than cities were tested for their ability to spell English words. Winners and runners-up from all cities proceeded to compete against each other by taking an online test simultaneously. The students with the top 16 scores across the country from this round qualified for the last phase—the National Finals— which was held in Mumbai over the weekend.
"With the mindless acceptance of the SMS culture, it is daunting to know how an increasing number of children aren't capable of spelling even basic words. Such competitions aid students to improve their spellings, communicate better and have a better edge in their studies and their careers," said Soha Ali Khan, who hosted the semi-finals and final, which will also be broadcasted exclusively on the Discovery Network every Sunday, from March 24. The top four contestants were also felicitated for their achievement with medals of recognition from the Times of India.
Also present at the event was quiz show guru Siddhartha Basu, who is the brain behind the contest. "It has taken a lot of effort to match contestants to the content. English is a forced project in today's world. Mastery over it at such young age is fantastic to watch, especially at a time when most children are moving away from the culture of reading and getting closer to the world of abbreviations and texting," said Basu.........
The finalists were selected after a series of tests conducted across the country and engaging with almost three lakh students from over 1000 schools over the past one year. All 16 finalists have shown t courage and talent. I also appreciate the support and enthusiams shown by their parents and teachers this year," said Prashant Panday, Executive Director and CEO,Entertainment Network India Ltd (ENIL).
